Four months after its start-up, 50% of its services are already operational and more than 5% of patients arrive from neighboring countries.
Opened in pre-inaugural mode since June 1, 2022, the Neurosurgery, Gynecology-Obstetrics and Consultation units were the first to start. Gradually, the additional units of Dental Surgery, Ophthalmology, Cardiology and Gastroenterology came went operational.
These units are backed by the Laboratory, Medical Imaging and Pharmacy departments, all equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Eventually, the neuroscience pool will cover diseases and medical conditions of the nervous system, psychiatric conditions and rehabilitation.
Between June and October 2022, the General Hospital of Garoua received just over 1,000 patients. 50% residents in Garoua, 30% in Ngaoundéré, 15% in Maroua and 5% from the Eastern Region, border countries (Chad and CAR).
During this period, 35 surgical operations were performed (20 in neurosurgery, 10 in obstetric surgery, 5 in orthopedic surgery). Although the gynecology-obstetrics unit is reserved for delicate deliveries following the logic of referral, 6 "elective" deliveries were carried out.
Pending the adoption of the price list by the Board of Directors, the prices charged are those in force at the regional hospital of the city.
These various services that fall within the mission of this first-class health facility, are provided by 30 civil servant medical staff, supported by a handful of trainees in the development phase and a few temporary workers in the secretariat.
Concerning the second mission which is that of Teaching, the hospital has just hosted the first training seminar in emergency medicine delivered to the first promotion of 6th year students from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Garoua.
As for the mission of Research which is also incumbent on it, the management team led by Dr. Bello FIGUIM is currently in the process of setting up research teams. Once established, the results of their work will certainly help to develop knowledge in various scientific fields.
It is therefore more than a hospital, an instrument for the permanent improvement of the well-being of populations.
